GTK+ 3.16 To Bring Several New Features

Already on Phoronix we have begun writing about features in Git for the GNOME 3.16 due out in March. GNOME contributor and Red Hat employee Matthias Clasen is excited too, particularly around some of the GTK+ tool-kit improvements.

For GNOME 3.16 with GTK+ 3.16 we've already wrote about some of the new features:

- Native OpenGL support for GTK+ for drawing that also includes a new GtkGLArea widget.

- Overlay scrollbars have finally made it into mainline GTK. This is priamrily for touch devices and a bit similar to Ubuntu's past work for overlay scrollbars.

Matthias Clasen wrote a blog post today that also documents some other early changes of GTK+ 3.16, and he also provides some videos of the new functionality in action.

- A Sidebar widget is also new (GtkSidebar) that is a way to turn the pages of a GtkStack.

- IPP printer support without depending upon PPD support.

- Pure CSS theming capabilities and is no longer using theme engines.

For GTK+ 3.16 there's also other changes on the GTK+ road-map including work on the GTK+ scene graph, style boxes, touchpad gestures, and more.
