Lightspark, one of the most recent yet most promising free software projects to provide an open-source Adobe Flash/SWF player and plug-in, just had its 0.4.5 milestone hit. Lightspark 0.4.5 is the release that brings its new advanced graphics engine for greater GPU acceleration by leveraging OpenGL and Cairo more heavily.

Besides dropping in the new graphics engine, which was the result of months of work, there isn't too much more to look at with Lightspark 0.4.5. Obviously it doesn't yet support Adobe's brand new video acceleration method that's part of Adobe Flash 10.2, but that acceleration works damn well if you are using NVIDIA hardware to exploit VDPAU. With an Intel IGP, however, it will just heat your lap.

The brief Lightspark 0.4.5 release announcement can be read here.
