Deb-Based Ubuntu Will Continue To Be Offered For The Foreseeable Future
While there's work on getting a Snappy version of Ubuntu's Desktop-Next in time for the Ubuntu 15.10 release in October, Debian based packages of Ubuntu Linux will continue to be offered for the foreseeable future.
With Ubuntu 15.10 there's no plans to make the Snappy version of Ubuntu the default and for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS it doesn't appear that way either with recent indications being that Ubuntu 16.04 LTS would be offered in two varieties with the conventional Unity 7 and then the Unity 8 + Mir converged experience, for the desktop users. However, in trying to address any initial concerns about the Snappy version of Ubuntu taking over the Deb-based archive for desktop users, that doesn't look like it will happen anytime soon.
Will Cooke, the Ubuntu Desktop Manager at Canonical, wants to make it clear that the Debian-packaged version of Ubuntu will be offered for the foreseeable future. In an email to Phoronix to take care of any confusion by users that Ubuntu could become Snappy-only, Will Cooke wrote, "The .deb based Ubuntu Desktop will still be around for the foreseeable future. As will the entire Ubuntu archive of .deb packages. If people want to continue to use Ubuntu as a .deb based distro, they can do that. This also means that the various Ubuntu flavours and respins can continue to sync from our archive."
