Vulkan Experts LunarG Split Into Two, Mobile Guys Head To Google
LunarG, the consulting company built around open-source graphics driver work that's long been involved within Mesa/Gallium3D, has announced they've split into two.
In order to "better address the needs of Vulkan", LunarG announced they are splitting up. LunarG's desktop group will continue on as LunarG and is sponored by Valve. Meanwhile, their mobile group will move to Google to work on Android. It's not clear from the initial statement if Google basically acquired LunarG's mobile group or how this arrangement came about.
LunarG has been heavily involved in the development of the Vulkan specification as well as SPIR-V as the intermediate representation. Thanks to Valve's sponsorship, they developed the open-source Intel Vulkan driver due to be released once the specification has been published. They've also been involved in the development of Vulkan's debugging layers, a developer portal, and more.
LunarG's brief statement about their split can be read here.
