It's Been Months Since The Last Unvanquished Release - There's Also A Vulkan Prototype
The promising Unvanquished open-source first person shooter game has been in development for years, is powered by the Daemon Engine as a distant derivative of id Tech 3, and has shown much potential from the engine to artwork. However, the past few months have been eerily quiet.
The last Unvanquished release was Alpha 50, which came in April. Normally, Unvanquished Alpha releases have come the first/second Sunday of every month, but now we've missed that for May, June, and it looks like July too.
Fortunately, it doesn't look like development has paused. In fact, Unvanquished Git is still very active. Via their forums I also found this thread where their project leader commented, "We're in the process of doing something very special. :wink:"
Unfortunately, not any further details were shared besides speculation that it's related to bots for the game.
Separately, I did notice this weekend that Unvanquished is working on a Vulkan renderer. Unvanquished's PrototypeRenderer Git branch is home to a Vulkan renderer, which is quite interesting to see for this game that's evolved well past the id Tech 3 days.
The Vulkan renderer for this game hasn't been touched since last month, but it gives hope of seeing some new potential out of this game. As soon as I am able to get any further information on the official cause for these skipped monthly updates, I'll certainly pass it along.
