Proton 6.3-1 Released With More Windows Games Now Running On Linux / Steam Play
To kick off a new month of Linux gaming, Valve today released Proton 6.3-1 as the latest version of their Wine downstream that powers Steam Play for running Windows games on Linux.
Proton 6.3-1 is significant in that it has re-based against Wine 6.3 compared to the prior Wine/Proton 5.13 series. Besides re-basing against the newer Wine upstream, there are many changes too.
First up, a number of additional games -- including many high profile titles -- are now working well on this new Proton:
- Divinity: Original Sin 2
- Shenmue I & II
- Mass Effect 3 N7 Digital Deluxe Edition (2012)
- Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Lockdown
- XCOM: Chimera Squad
- Bioshock 2 Remastered
- Company of Heroes 2
- logiCally
- Rise of the Triad
- Home Behind 2
- Shadow Empire
- Arena Wars 2
- King Arthur: Knight's Tale
- Rise of Venice
- ARK Park
- Gravity Sketch
- Battle Arena VR
Some of the technical items to note with Proton 6.3-1 include pulling in DXVK 1.8.1 and VKD3D-Proton 2.2 for mapping Direct3D 9/10/11 and Direct3D 12, respectively, atop the Vulkan API. There is also a newer FAudio and Wine-Mono. This Proton update also improves Uplay sign-in handling, fixes Microsoft Flight Simulator in VR mode, and other fixes.
This Proton update also promotes some items that were previously just in Proton Experimental like better PlayStation 5 controller support, improved virtual reality start-up time and compatibility, support for setting thread priorities via RTKit, and improved video support.
