NVIDIA Updates Its Linux Legacy Driver For GeForce 6/7 GPUs

For those still out there running a GeForce 6 or 7 series graphics card, NVIDIA has updated its legacy proprietary 304.xx Unix graphics driver for Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris systems.

NVIDIA 304.123 is the new proprietary driver release out today that offers up various Linux graphics driver fixes for those using this binary blob on the legacy GeForce products. Fixed by the NVIDIA 304.123 driver is system instability when restoring the VGA console, an interaction problem with X.Org Server 1.15, updated the NVIDIA bug reporting script, support for the X.Org Server 1.16 ABI, and a bug causing corruption or blank screens for monitors of EDID version 1.3 and older under certain configurations.

Aside from the fixes, the prominent change is for X.Org Server 1.16 support. The xorg-server 1.16 release hasn't even occurred yet and NVIDIA already updated their mainline Linux graphics driver while now they've updated their legacy blobs too. The 1.16 release is coming out later this month. NVIDIA's timing for new kernels and xorg-server releases continue to be great, especially considering the mainline Catalyst driver has yet to support the new server ABI.
