Guix 0.7 Can Now Install The GNU Operating System
The Guix package manager that's designed to be a purely-functional package manager for GNU with an emphasis on being dependable, hackable, and liberating is out with its latest release.
GNU Guix 0.7 was released this Friday morning and it's a big release for the project given that the package manager now is also able to install the GNU operating system from a USB stick. It's not a GNU Hurd system but GNU/Linux with support for 32-bit and 64-bit x86 architectures. This distribution doesn't include any GUI system / desktop environment and doesn't support SWAP devices, LVM, and few system services are currently supported. There's around 1,000 (mostly GNU) packages available for installation.
The GNU Guix 0.7 release also has various new sub-commands for guix, programming for Guix has been simplified, and there's more than 130 new packages available by Guix -- including for major components like the GIMP image editing application.
