NVIDIA today pushed out the big Android 6.0 "Marshmallow" update to SHIELD TV owners and with this update comes support for the Vulkan graphics API.

NVIDIA is providing Android developers with fully-conformant Vulkan 1.0 drivers for Android to complement their Linux and Windows drivers that were released as beta last week. NVIDIA is also publishing Vulkan Android code samples.

Besides the 6.0 Marshmallow update for the SHIELD TV having Vulkan support, other features of this update include wireless support for the SHIELD controller when charging via USB, improved color support for YUV 4:2:0 video playback, support for 1080p @ 60Hz on Ultra HD TVs, an RGB Full Range setting option, support for HDMI CEC volume control on more audio receivers, and various other improvements.

More details on the SHIELD TV Android 6.0 update can be found via this blog post.

The NVIDIA SHIELD TV powered by the high-performance Tegra X1 SoC retails for starting at $199 USD. The Tegra X1 usage plus its feature-set and NVIDIA's continued updates and support makes the SHIELD TV one of my favorite HTPC / media streaming devices currently on the market.
