NVIDIA Open-Sources "NVDLA", Open-Source Hardware Project

NVIDIA has announced a new open-source project: NVDLA.

NVDLA is short for the NVIDIA Deep Learning Accelerator. They explain, "The NVIDIA Deep Learning Accelerator (NVDLA) is a free and open architecture that promotes a standard way to design deep learning inference accelerators. With its modular architecture, NVDLA is scalable, highly configurable, and designed to simplify integration and portability. The hardware supports a wide range of IoT devices. Delivered as an open source project under the NVIDIA Open NVDLA License, all of the software, hardware, and documentation will be available on GitHub. Contributions are welcome."

The NVDLA hardware architecture is based upon their "Xavier" automotive processor. Their open-source support for NVDLA appears fairly complete with including Linux drivers, test suites and a simulator, and complete with the Verilog and RTL for this deep learning hardware architecture.


NVDLA right now is compatible with Linux while they say it can be ported to other operating systems. The NVDLA accelerator architecture is modular and currently comprised of a convolution core, single data processor, planar data processor, channel data processor, dedicated memory and data reshape engine.
