SDL 2.0.4 Was Quietly Released Last Week With Wayland & Mir By Default
Released last weekend to not much fanfare was SDL 2.0.4, a significant update to the Simple DirectMedia Library, which is commonly used by cross-platform games.
SDL 2.0.4 is the release that most notably enables Mir and Wayland support by default! It was just by chance I stumbled across the new release earlier today and doesn't seem to really be advertised. SDL 2.0.4 was long overdue and besides enabling the Mir and Wayland back-end support by default it also adds IBus IME support, support for EmScripten and Google Native Client, modern CPU feature detection, Vivante video driver support, and much more.
There are also many new API additions, drag-and-drop support for OS X, iOS 8 support, Raspberry Pi 2 support, and a whole lot more. This release succeeds SDL 2.0.3 from 22 months ago.
SDL 2.0.4 is available to download from source from LibSDL.org and will be exciting to see how the Mir and Wayland support is stacking up for native Linux games that support SDL2. If you'd like to see some benchmarks, join Phoronix Premium (if not already), and request them benchmarks of your wishes!
