Eric Anholt sent in the pull request today to land the VC4 DRM driver's 3D code into DRM-Next, which in turn would then hit Linux 4.5. This adds over 5,000 lines of new code to the VC4 DRM driver for being able to provide the kernel bits for 3D acceleration on the Broadcom GPUs in an open-source manner. Of course, over in user-space is all of the code in Mesa Git with the VC4 Gallium3D driver for completing the circle and allowing OpenGL ES to run on the Raspberry Pi under open-source.
While this code won't land in mainline until Linux 4.5, Eric Anholt at Broadcom is hoping to get the Raspberry Pi Foundation to pickup this support in their upcoming Linux 4.2 kernel spin so that it will reach Raspberry Pi users sooner.
The details were just shared via this pull request.
