New Unreal Tournament 3 Linux Details
Contrary to early reports that there would be a Linux client binary that would ship on the Unreal Tournament 3 DVD inside the game's box, this will not be the case. Ryan Gordon (a.k.a. "Icculus"), the one responsible for the UT3 client and server ports for Linux and Mac, has stated this morning that the Linux client will not be in the game's box. The Unreal Tournament 3 Linux client will be available for download after the game's release and will be compatible with the UT3 Windows DVD media. Like Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, Unreal Tournament 3 is optimized for multi-core machines on Linux.
Ryan has also stated this morning that there are no intentions of doing a 64-bit version of Unreal Tournament 3 for Linux. Though if time permits, he may produce a x86_64 build anyways. On a positive note though, the editor for Unreal Tournament 3 (UnrealEd) now uses wxWidgets on all platforms, which helps in making it cross-platform for Linux. UnrealEd for UT3 will be made available for Linux at some point in the future.
