Rich Geldreich On The State Of Linux Gaming

Rich Geldreich, the former Valve developer who did a lot of work on the VOGL OpenGL debugger before leaving the game company, and has been critical of OpenGL and its drivers, has written a new post on the state of Linux gaming.

Long story short, the state of Linux gaming from Geldreich's perspective isn't too good compared to Windows. The quality and performance of Linux game ports generally comes up short of the Windows titles, Linux game developers tend to prefer just the NVIDIA Linux binary driver, and the difficulty in having Linux games outperform their Windows counterparts.

Rich also criticized the state of the Intel Linux drivers with Valve paying LunarG to come up with Intel Linux OpenGL performance optimizations rather than the driver developers themselves.

Lastly, Rich isn't too enthusiast right now about SteamOS and wonders what's going on with it and the Steam Machines that have yet to really materialize.
