Key features worked on during the KDE 4.8 six-month cycle include KWin window manager optimizations, KDE's Dolphin file-manager has been largely re-written for a better user-interface and performance, improvements to the Kate text editor, KDE Telepathy is now in beta, and the KDE 4.8 platform has been enhanced too.
Some of the other features of KDE 4.8 that are being pushed heavily include adaptive power management within Plasma Workspaces, better stability and performance, and many application-level boosts.

Meanwhile KDE 4.9 is already heating up with more KWin work, rewriting parts of KWin in JavaScript, greater QML usage, and other Plasma advancements. Neither KDE 4.8 or 4.9 are playing under Wayland as was originally anticipated.
