DragonBox Pyra Goes Up For Pre-Order

It's been a while since last hearing anything about the DragonBox Pyra as an open-source gaming handheld system and successor to OpenPandora, but that changed this weekend with the launch of pre-orders for this Linux-powered device.

The DragonBox Pyra finally went up for pre-orders on Saturday while it's been a few years in development and manufactured over in Germany. The DragonBox Pyra features a TI OMAP5432 dual-core Cortex-A15 SoC with PowerVR SGX544MP2 graphics, various gaming controls, a QWERTY keyboard, 5-inch 720p LCD display, dual SDXC slots, micro-USD 3.0, full-size USB 2/3 ports, a 3G/4G optional module, and more.

The device is powered by Debian GNU/Linux and the hardware aims to be upgradeable thanks to a modular design.

The specs aren't really impressive especially for a device costing several hundred EUR. The 2GB standard edition will set you back 330 EUR while the version will start at 400 EUR. The device aims to be open-source hardware, but of course the main blocker right now is the use of PowerVR SGX graphics that don't have any reliable open-source 3D driver.
