AMDVLK 2022.Q4.2 Brings More Performance Tuning
Following AMDVLK 2022.Q4.1 from late October, AMDVLK 2022.Q4.2 is now available as AMD's latest official open-source Vulkan Linux driver update for both gamers and enterprise customers.
Ahead of next month's Radeon RX 7000 series launch with the RX 7900 XT / RX 7900 XTX, AMD driver engineers internally are likely quite busy working on the RDNA3 GPU support. With AMDVLK 2022.Q4.2 there is no mentions of the upcoming RDNA3 support but there are at least a few changes to benefit existing Radeon GPU users of this Vulkan driver.
AMDVLK 2022.Q4.2 mentions performance tuning, similar to prior driver releases. Among the games that have seen performance optimization work with this update include Wolfenstein II, Wolfenstein Young Blood, Quake II RTX, and DDnet. AMD continues optimizing the AMDVLK Vulkan performance both for native Linux titles as well as games running under Linux by way of Steam Play (DXVK/VKD3D-Proton + Proton).
The AMDVLK 2022.Q4.2 driver is also built against the newer Vulkan 1.3.232 header files, fixes some conformance test suite failures, and also fixes a rendering issue with the game Battlefield 1 running on Steam Play. Source downloads along with binaries for Ubuntu and RHEL systems can be found via AMD's GPUOpen-Drivers on GitHub.
With Mesa 22.3 due out in the weeks ahead, it will be time for a fresh RADV vs. AMDVLK Vulkan driver comparison to close out the year.
