Intel Lunar Lake Linux Benchmarks Are Still Forthcoming
While there were many Windows reviews/benchmarks out Tuesday for Intel Core Ultra 200 Series "Lunar Lake" laptops on various websites, Linux tests are still awaiting due to having resorted to pre-ordering a Lunar Lake laptop myself for delivering Linux support/compatibility information and performance benchmarks. But hopefully by this time next week will be the initial data set.
The review embargo expired Tuesday on the Intel Core Ultra 200V Series "Lunar Lake" but unfortunately no Linux numbers or support details at this time due to Intel having not provided any review hardware for testing... Nor any even briefing material until bringing it up last week at the Enterprise Tech Tour. But in realizing the situation weeks ago, I had pre-ordered a Lunar Lake laptop for Linux testing to be able to provide Linux support insights and performance benchmarks on Phoronix.
As of writing that pre-order with Best Buy is still scheduled to ship by Thursday for its scheduled 26 September launch date. I would have hoped for it to ship already, but alas... As a reminder the laptop I ordered for the Linux testing is an ASUS Zenbook S 14 (UX5406SA-PH79T) with Core Ultra 7 258V SoC. So if you're like I and very eager to see how Lunar Lake is running and performing under Linux, just a few more days to go. Given the timing if it arrives by Thursday~Friday I should have out initial Linux data by Monday or Tuesday of next week and then many follow-up articles to come.
The expectation going into this is that Linux 6.12 Git is basically needed if wanting the Xe2 integrated graphics out-of-the-box. It isn't until now with the very latest Linux 6.12 Git that the Lunar Lake graphics are enabled by default but I'll see how well it works on Linux 6.11 stable with the Xe driver "force_probe" override trick. Aside from the graphics, hopefully the rest of the Linux support is in good shape and it should be from my external monitoring. The Intel Xe2 graphics are my main area for concern with the at-launch Linux support but I'll see if there is any other surprises once being able to do the hands-on testing. And then, of course, tons of Linux benchmarking for seeing how the Intel Core Ultra 200 series performs compared to prior Intel Linux laptops as well as the AMD Ryzen AI 300 series competition.
