FreeBSD Achieved A Lot In Q1'2012
For the first three months of the 2012 calendar year, the FreeBSD project achieved a lot when it came to advancing their open operating system. Here's some of the interesting highlights from their quarterly status report.
The FreeBSD Q1'2012 quarterly status report can be read in full here, while below are some of the most interesting tid-bits.
- There's a new linux_base port based upon CentOS. This is good news for cases where it comes to running Linux games on FreeBSD.
- FreeBSD finally has working Atheros 802.11n wireless support that is fully functional. However, there is no host AP-side power-savings, TX aggregation, or TX BAR handling. There's also not station-chip power saving for this Atheros 802.11n WiFi support on FreeBSD.
- There's a new project to get FreeBSD up and running on ARM hardware like the Texas Instruments OMAP3/OMAP4 PandaBoard hardware as well as the BeagleBone.
- A project to be able to grow ZFS and UFS file-systems while their online/mounted.
- HDMI/DisplayPort audio support in the HDA sound driver.
- KDE in FreeBSD is up to version 4.7.4 / 4.8.2 in ports. There's also Qt 4.8/4.8.1, Amarok 2.5.0, and Calligra 2.3.87.
- FreeBSD developers have ported DTrace to MIPS while their port to ARM is currently a work-in-progress.
- Clang is quickly GCC in FreeBSD. There's also GNU-free C++11 support moving along.
