Richard Hughes of Red Hat just announced Fwupd 2.0 as a major release to this open-source firmware updating utility for Linux systems. Fwupd 2.0 clears out a lot of long deprecated and legacy bits while adding new features and shipping many fixes.

The major version bump allows for Fwupd 2.0 to remove long-deprecated legacy CLI tools, dropping old libraries, and other changes to reduce runtime memory use and CPU startup costs. Legacy signing formats for verification of metadata and firmware have been removed.

New features in Fwupd 2.0 include an option to ignore firmware requirements for development, an API to allow uploading reports in GNOME-Firmware, support to run "fwupdtool esp-list --json", support for more modify-config options, support for large sections in EFI FFS3 volumes, and support for more CRC-16/CRC-32 types.
