Examination:

The OCZ Vertex SSD uses a 2.5-inch form factor and has its standard Serial ATA power and data ports. Unlike the older OCZ Core Series V2, there is no mini USB port on this SSD to use it for external purposes. Should you be interested in opening up the drive there are four screws (plus a warranty sticker) that need to be removed from the bottom of the Vertex. Inside the Vertex one will find the Samsung MLC flash memory chips with an Indilinx Barefoot controller and a 64MB memory IC for its cache.

This drive is rated to have a 1.5 million hours mean time between failures (MTBF) and should be able to withstand up to 1500G of shock while being able to operate between 0°C and 70°C. The total weight of this solid state drive is just 77 grams. The 60GB version that we were reviewing is rated to have read speeds up to 230MB/s, write speeds up to 135MB/s, and sustained write speeds up to 70MB/s. The 120GB Vertex from OCZ Technology is rated to be the fastest with read speeds up to 250MB/s, write speeds up to 180MB/s, and sustained write speeds up to 100MB/s.
