Today Is Fedora's Beefy Miracle Day (F17 Release)

Fedora 17, the Beefy Miracle, will be released today.

After suffering a few delays, Fedora 17 is being officially released within the next few hours. Until then, here's some information to get caught up on this first Fedora Linux release of 2012.

- Fedora 17 has set a trend for Fedora releases now of having quirky codenames. Succeeding the Beefy Miracle release later in the year is Spherical Cow. The Beefy Miracle codename led Ubuntu's Jono Bacon to dress up as a hot dog and to serving Fedora hot dogs with openSUSE beer at LinuxTag Berlin.

- GNOME Shell over LLVMpipe will be used in Fedora 17 when there is no GPU driver support, rather than falling back to a GNOME classic environment.

- There's new multi-touch support and other features for this new release.

- A whole lot of new packages are found in F17 like the new GIMP, updated desktops, GCC 4.7, and other features.

- Fedora has moved to a unified file-system.

- This release failed to have Btrfs by default but they will try again for Fedora 18.

- The multi-seat capabilities are really great.

Plus other meaty features to go with the Beefy Miracle.

Another Phoronix article will come when Fedora 17 is officially announced. Benchmarks of Fedora 17 will come beginning next week when I'm back to my office in America. Luc Verhaegen, the controversial X.Org developer who has previously worked on the VIA Unichrome driver, one of the RadeonHD driver developers, and former SUSE employee. Now he's employed by Codethink where he works on the open-source ARM Mali driver reverse-engineering, an Android compositor and other work for Intel, and various other projects.

The huge Phoronix beer drop, perhaps only ever outdone by all the drinks in Oslo.

While not normal for the region, lederhosen and toe shoes were still to be worn. Though at least in Berlin it's still normal to walk down the street (or anywhere) with a beer.
