AMD Radeon HD 2000 Series & Linux

Reiterating some of the technical features for the Radeon HD 2400PRO from our original article, the RV610 GPU offers 40 stream processors, 256MB of 64-bit GDDR2 memory, DirectX 10.0 and OpenGL 2.0 compliance, AMD Xilleon HDTV encoding, and HDMI support. The core clock for the HD 2400PRO is 525MHz while the memory operates at 400MHz.

While the PCI IDs for several Radeon HD 2000 series graphics cards are present in the recent fglrx driver releases, the R600 support isn't quite there yet. The Radeon HD 2400PRO was detected by the driver, X.Org started smoothly, and we were even able to enter the AMD Catalyst Control Center just fine, but OpenGL rendering had defaulted back to Mesa. With that said, the latest fglrx driver available in conjunction with the Radeon HD 2000 series is rather useless. As was mentioned in The State of ATI Linux 2007, the R600 support will likely coincide with the release of the new fglrx driver, which is still a few months away.
