Ubuntu returned to outperforming Mac OS X 10.6 with its NVIDIA graphics when looking at the text rendering performance using the Java 2D Microbenchmark.

Ubuntu 9.04 and Mac OS X 10.6.0 performed about the same at the LAME MP3 encoding test, but the development snapshot of Ubuntu 9.10 was about 4% faster than Snow Leopard.

Ubuntu 9.04 did better than Mac OS X 10.6.0 at converting RAW image files to PPM format, but Ubuntu's performance regressed slightly with the Karmic Koala, which was the slowest of the three operating systems tested.
