More Benchmarks Of The Latest Ubuntu 17.04 vs. Clear Linux

Last week I posted Benchmarks Of Ubuntu 17.04 Beta vs. Antergos, Clear Linux, openSUSE Tumbleweed. Those results were interesting and as usual Clear Linux had led many of the benchmarks due to Intel's investments into highly optimizing this Linux distribution for the maximum out-of-the-box performance. For curiosity sake, I ran some fresh benchmarks of Ubuntu 17.04 daily vs. Clear Linux on another test system and have those results to share.

For this round of testing was an Intel Xeon E3-1245 v5 Skylake system with MSI C236A WORKSTATION motherboard, 32GB DDR4-2133 memory, 120GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD, and integrated HD Graphics P530.

Ubuntu 17.04 in its current state is using the Linux 4.10 kernel, Unity 7.5, X.Org Server 1.18.4, Mesa 13.0.4, and GCC 6.3.0. Clear Linux is on Linux 4.10, Xfce 4.12, X.Org Server 1.19.1, Mesa 17.1-devel, and GCC 6.3.0.

That's the quick look at the 50+ tests run. As you can see, Clear Linux continues to lead over Ubuntu 17.04 on this particular system too.


Some of the graphics tests still side with Clear, even though desktop/gaming isn't a main focus of the Intel OTC project.

Their aggressive compiler flags by default and using CPUFreq over P-State explain the distribution's impact in many of the computational benchmarks.


Sometimes the differences are very profound.

But in some workloads, Ubuntu has a minor advantage.
