NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti: Windows 10 Creators Update vs. Ubuntu Linux Gaming
Tomb Raider remains much faster on Windows 10 than the OpenGL Linux port, similar to our Radeon findings.
Total War: WARHAMMER on Linux with the GTX 1080 Ti on the 381.09 beta driver does deliver fairly close performance to the Windows 10 performance, at least compared to some other Linux ported games, but it still would be a measurable difference for those gamers moving from Windows to Linux.
Overall these results show that the NVIDIA Linux driver for OpenGL (and Vulkan, at least with The Talos Principle) is capable of delivering the same performance under both Windows and Linux. Even with the newly-released Unigine Superposition is nearly the same performance under both platforms. But due to the quality of many Linux game ports out there especially the ones going from Direct3D to OpenGL, the performance overhead remains very significant. Especially as more Linux game porters begin leveraging Vulkan, hopefully we will see better performing Linux game ports moving forward.
