AMD Ryzen 7 7700X vs. Core i9 11900K AVX-512 Performance Analysis
First up was AI-Benchmark and for its AI training benchmark saw nice uplift from AVX-512 on both desktop CPUs... Having AVX-512 enabled improved the Ryzen 7 7700X score by 70% while the Core i9 11900K processor's performance went up by 61%.
Or when looking at the AI inference performance, the Intel Rocket Lake processor regressed with AVX-512 enabled while the AMD Zen 4 processor's score improved by 23%.
When looking at the overall "AI score" from this software package, the Core i9 11900K performance improved by 27.5% with AVX-512 enabled while the Ryzen 7 7700X was up by 46%.
In this particular benchmark the AVX-512 use on Rocket Lake didn't significantly drive up the power consumption like it does in some workloads. The Ryzen 7 7700X power consumption was similar during both runs.
With both processors are healthy performance-per-Watt increases thanks to AVX-512 with this AI benchmark.
Another AI workload making use of AVX-512 that was tested is Neural Magic's DeepSparse.
DeepSparse was enjoying noticeably better performance on both processors with AVX-512 enabled and roughly similar relative improvements over the AVX-512 off state.
But in the case of the Intel Core i9 11900K, it was consuming 13%+ more power when employing AVX-512. Meanwhile the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X was consistently showing the same power use whether AVX-512 was enabled or not.
Neural Magic's DeepSparse was showing much benefit out of AVX-512 for both Intel and AMD CPUs. The AMD Zen 4 performance was showing the AVX-512 "double pumped" implementation to still be very effective and without the large power increases seen with the Core i9 11900K.
