One of the bigger launches in the gaming hardware at Computex is ATI’s Crossfire. Crossfire is ATI’s answer to NVIDIA’s SLI dual graphics solution. There are a few key differences as you can see from the slides below. First of all it is game independent, which means ALL games are supported, unlike NVIDIA’s SLI that requires a game profile in order for the game to be accelerated. How does it work? You simply need to have any X8XX series graphics card and its corresponding Crossfire edition graphics card. Linking these two will allow them to work together due to the Crossfire card’s compositing engine. The cards can be matched with any brand of card and do not need to be identical chips or anything, allowing for much more flexibility. However, its Linux driver support still appears to be up in the air.
