The 32-bit Ubuntu performance for FFmpeg was already better than Mac OS X, but switching to a 64-bit environment led to being about 10% quicker at the audio/video encoding task.

Ubuntu x86_64 was slower than Ubuntu i386 at compiling PHP, but it was just about three seconds slower. GCC 4.2 in OS X was much slower than GCC 4.3 on Ubuntu 9.04.

Ubuntu 64-bit was also slower than the 32-bit counterpart at compiling ImageMagick.
