AMD EPYC 7003 "Milan" Linux Benchmarks - Superb Performance
For those wondering how the AMD EPYC 7003 parts stack up against Ampere Altra, here is an overview look at the Ampere Altra Q80-33 2P up against the Xeon Platinum 8280 2P and the various Milan tested processors. These numbers are separate from the other tests due to the difference in tests that not only work on ARMv8 but have a comparable quality / similar level of optimizations between ARMv8 and x86_64. Ampere's Mount Jade server with the Q80-33 2P was tested with 160 cores in total that clock up to 3.3GHz.
Ampere Altra has the physical core count advantage being able to pack 80 cores per socket or up to a 160 core physical configuration. So in some cases like C-Ray that run well on ARMv8 and highly threaded, the Altra Q80-33 can prove to be competitive with the x86-64 hardware.
Likewise with GPAW it manages to just pass the EPYC 7763 2P.
For workloads like code compilation, it largely depends upon how many source files are part of the build for how well it can be threaded if the 160 cores pay off or if AMD EPYC Milan with its higher boost clock potential is of more benefit, among other architectural differences.
