Examination:

The ASUS VE228H does not look very different from the VH236 or most other monitors for that matter. The black bezel surrounding the TFT LCD panel is made of plastic and is about the same thickness as the Dell P2210H that was reviewed earlier this year.

On the bottom right side of the ASUS LCD monitor are six buttons for adjusting video inputs, accessing the on-screen display menu, adjusting audio levels and brightness, and the power button itself. The power button illuminates blue when the monitor is powered on and receiving a signal.

The stand to this monitor simply allows the display to be tilted forwards and backwards, but there are no height adjustments, rotation support, or a swivel base. The base is quite simple but it is sturdy and should prove to be reliable. There's also a standard 100 x 100mm VESA wall mount for those that may wish to attach the display to a monitor table arm or wall mount.

The ASUS logo can be found imprinted into the center of the monitor's rear while the plastic surface around it is rather shiny and fingerprint-prone. The connectors from the backside, of course, include inputs for AC power, audio, DVI-D, VGA D-Sub, and HDMI. There is also a headphone jack, but it is on the back of the display near the other ports so it is not too handy. There is also a Kensington lock slot near the power input.

Built into the ASUS VE228H are dual one-Watt speakers.

On-Screen Display:

The ASUS on-screen display is similar to that of the other ASUS monitors we have used that offer their "Splendid" technology. With Splendid from the OSD you can change between modes for scenery, standard, theater, game, and night view. There are also the usual options for manually controlling the brightness, contrast, sharpness, saturation, color temperature, and volume level.
