Multi-Core Scaling Performance Of AMD's Bulldozer

Scaling Bulldozer, Gulftown, Sandy, Shanghai

The 7-Zip compression results for the multi-core scaling of the FX-8150 is not as favorable as the Gulftown and Shanghai test beds, but it is close to the Sandy Bridge results. With four threads, the FX-8150 is 4.33x faster, but with eight threads, it's a speed-up of 5.44x compared to the single-thread result. The dual Opteron 2384 workstation manages a 5.88x boost with four threads or a 7.39x boost over the lone thread. For the very expensive Core i7 990X Extreme, four threads in 7-Zip has a value of 5.13x and with the six cores + HT it is at 6.24x.

Scaling Bulldozer, Gulftown, Sandy, Shanghai

Shanghai and Gulftown processors continue to lead in scaling performance when handling x264 video encoding. The Core i5 2500K also does well for its four cores and matches up to the Gulftown numbers. The FX-8150 falls in between the Shanghai/Gulftown results and the struggling Core i7 2630QM. Moving from one core to eight on Bulldozer yields a 4.86x improvement for the FX-8150 while the dual Opteron quad-cores hit 5.52x and the i7 990X is at 4.33x.
