OCZ DDR2 PC2-4200 1GB Gold GX XTC

Back on the first of this year, OCZ Technology's EL PC-4000 2GB Gold GX XTC DDR modules had made an appearance on our penguin workbench. With the adoption of the new Xtreme Thermal Convection heatspreaders, more air is able to cool the memory chips as well as allowing the exhaust to dissipate from the memory area. As we had exposed in our initial GX XTC article, disassembling the heatspreaders yielded nothing more than an aluminum honeycomb mesh and OCZ frame. Although its design may be simple, it certainly allows for improved cooling although we would have liked to see the use of copper rather than aluminum, for improved heat dissipation. Now, a week later, we are back with OCZ Technology as they had recently unveiled their line-up of DDR2 modules in the Gold GX XTC (Gamer eXtreme Xtreme Thermal Convection) series. The modules we have our hands on today for this review is OCZ's DDR2 PC2-4200 Gold GX XTC Dual Channel kit.

Like OCZ's past system memory products, the GX XTC PC2-4200 shipped in a petite plastic container with generic DDR2 paper insert. Although we had originally scheduled to examine OCZ's 2 x 1GB PC2-5400 XTC kit, due to a shipping mishap we ended up with a 2 x 512MB PC2-4200 XTC kit. Nevertheless, OCZ presently offers DDR2-533MHz and DDR2-667MHz Gold kits and we imagine that shortly they will introduce a DDR2-800MHz variant. With each of these kits, they are available in both 2 x 512MB and 2 x 1024MB varieties.
