13-Way Radeon Graphics On Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
To complement last week's Radeon Windows Catalyst vs. Linux Gallium3D vs. Linux Catalyst OpenGL performance comparison on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, here's benchmarks of thirteen different AMD Radeon graphics cards on the near-final state of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS "Trusty Tahr" in its current development form.
With Ubuntu now past its final beta release and the kernel freeze also having happened this week, we're in very good shape for seeing how the final Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Linux package configuration is looking like and performing. Ubuntu 14.04 is shipping the middle of this month with the Linux 3.13 kernel, xf86-video-ati 7.3.0, X.Org Server 1.15.0, Unity 7.1.2, and the Mesa 10.1 3D graphics stack.
From this stock install of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS x86_64 done this week, I re-benchmarked 13 different Radeon graphics cards to see their performance with various OpenGL games on this near-final Ubuntu Linux state:
- Radeon HD 4670
- Radeon HD 4770
- Radeon HD 4870
- Radeon HD 5770
- Radeon HD 5830
- Radeon HD 6450
- Radeon HD 6770
- Radeon HD 6870
- Radeon HD 6950
- Radeon HD 7850
- Radeon HD 7950
- Radeon R7 260X
- Radeon R9 270X
All benchmarking was handled via the Phoronix Test Suite software. These results today are mainly being put out for reference purposes for those wishing to see how the different AMD Radeon graphics cards of many generations are performing with the open-source Linux driver. If you want to see how your own system runs against these results it's very easy with OpenBenchmarking.org by running the Phoronix Test Suite and then running phoronix-test-suite benchmark 1404040-PL-RADEONBUN78.
