With the different kernels and RHEL7 using XFS while Ubuntu 14.04 is using EXT4, there were certainly differing performance results when it came to the disk benchmarks. However, for the small set of disk benchmarks used, the performance was mixed. In general, however, other HDD and SSD testing of various Linux file-systems have shown that on recent kernels the XFS file-system can outperform EXT4 for several different disk workloads.

For many CPU workloads, the performance between Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 will be close since both development Linux operating systems are currently relying upon the same compiler: GCC 4.8.2.
