The Cost Of Home Directory Encryption & LUKS Full Disk Encryption On Ubuntu 18.04
With FS-Mark run single-threaded, the full-disk encryption performance wasn't too much of a hit over no encryption and still better than the home directory encryption.
The only downside to full disk encryption over home directory encryption is the slightly higher CPU usage.
In the other FS-Mark test runs, the full disk encryption performance was actually faster than no encryption. This anomaly is likely due to the full disk encryption causing greater CPU usage and this likely caused the P-State CPU frequency scaling driver to ramp up the clock frequencies more often than it did with home directory encryption or no encryption at all.
