Ubuntu 12.10 Prepares To Improve Linux Performance
C-Ray, the multi-threaded ray-tracer, is one of the test profiles that does tremendously better under GCC 4.7 on modern Intel hardware. Like many of these performance boosts, the improvement is not Ubuntu-specific but rather any Linux distribution that is pulling in these updated packages from their upstream sources.
Smallpt, unfortunately, regresses as does some of the Minion tests.
Stay tuned for more Ubuntu Linux benchmarks on Phoronix as the 12.10 release nears, when more hardware will be tossed into the testing mix as well. Aside from upping the performance, other Ubuntu 12.10 plans and features are covered in my UDS-Q summit notes.
