The launch of the RV770 GPU earlier this year by AMD was quite successful. The Radeon HD 4850 and Radeon HD 4870 series feature best-in-class performance and Linux customers were greeted by an evolutionary step in ATI/AMD Linux support. Linux users with these graphics cards now have CrossFire, OverDrive, RandR 1.2, X-Video Bitstream Acceleration, and other new functionality. If you are looking for leading performance and all of the bells and whistles on the newest ATI graphics cards but at a lower cost, AMD recently introduced the Radeon HD 4830. In this article we are looking at the Sapphire Radeon HD 4830 512MB under Ubuntu Linux.

Features:

- 575MHz Core Clock
- 900MHz Memory Clock
- Dual-Slot Active Cooler
- 256-bit GDDR3 Memory
- 24x Custom-Filter Anti-Aliasing
- ATI CrossFireX Compatible
- PCI Express 2.0 Support
- ATI Avivo HD / Unified Video Decoder 2

The Sapphire Radeon HD 4830 arrived in similar packaging to the Sapphire HD 4550 512MB. The colorful packaging had showed off various features of this product -- such as its 7.1 channel HDMI audio and CrossFireX support -- along with other graphics. In addition to the dual-slot PCI Express 2.0 graphics card was a 4-pin molex to 6-pin PCI-E power adapter, DVI to HDMI adapter, DVI to VGA adapter, component video adapter, composite video adapter, quick installation guide, and Windows driver CD. Sapphire has yet to begin shipping Linux drivers with any of their products. We personally don't mind them not doing this since users should always fetch the latest drivers from ATI's web-site or through their distribution's package management system, but still this would be a nice sign of commitment to the Linux community.
