An Early Look At OpenSolaris 2009.06

Sun Microsystems has been hard at work on their OpenSolaris 2009.06 operating system, and Solaris Express Community Edition (SXCE) for which it is based. This week marked the release of Solaris Express Community Edition Build 110 and the crew at Genunix are hosting a new preview build of OpenSolaris 2009.06 atop this latest build, which we decided to try out this evening and have provided a few screenshots.

Since the release of OpenSolaris 2008.11, OpenSolaris developers have updated a number of packages. Among the prominently updated packages are GNOME 2.24.2, X Server 1.5, and Mozilla Firefox 3.1 Beta 2.

The OpenSolaris package manager for the Image Packaging System has also received a couple of upgrades. Another prominent item worth noting with OpenSolaris 2009.06 is that it has incorporated Codeina (originally from the Fedora Project) for managing some of the codecs and being able to legally install some G-Streamer codecs from Fluendo.
