Low-End NVIDIA/AMD GPU Comparison On Open-Source Drivers

The graphics cards that ended up producing some OpenGL performance results for this latest comparison included on the AMD side the Radeon HD 4550, HD 4670, HD 5450, HD 6450, and HD 6570. On the NVIDIA side with the Nouveau open-source driver was the GeForce 8400GS, 9500GT, 9600GSO, and GT 520.

For those hoping to also see the binary driver benchmarks, the open-source vs. closed-source driver comparison that's updated for the latest code on both sides will be published in March with a wider selection of graphics cards both low and high-end. This testing is just about providing some performance reference numbers for those that may be looking towards a cheap graphics card to use with the open-source Linux graphics drivers.

Ubuntu 13.04 was running on the system with the Xfce 4.10 desktop environment, Linux 3.8 kernel, Mesa 9.2-devel, xf86-video-ati 7.1.0, and xf86-video-nouveau 1.0.6. Swap buffers wait was disabled during testing.

All Linux benchmarking was handled in a fully automated fashion using the Phoronix Test Suite software.
