What People Are Saying About GNOME [Part 5]

4601: > add an application dock like docky, which can be access without the activities-menu (i know the shell-extension, but a default dock would be nice)
> if there is a notification: i use multiple monitors and i don't see maybe an empathy-notification. a jumping icon or an equal thing would be great (think of the osx dock)
> possibility to use workspaces horizontal like in GNOME 2.x. I often use hotkeys in eclipse like crtl+alt+top (not so important)

i love the cloud-integreation in documents and the new online accounts. keep this way going

4602: Better themes.
A little more easily configurable.
Move the Close, Maximise, Minimise buttons to the left.

Keep up the good work.

4603: Speed (quicker)
Ease: hide options that are not used by 99% of the people using GNOME
Add the option add/remove border and an option to do it automatically

yes, see above

4604: Window management improvements.

4605: 1. Bring back gnome 2 interface. Gnome shell is an unusable mess.
2. Bring back gnome 2 interface. Gnome shell is an unusable mess.
2. Bring back gnome 2 interface. Gnome shell is an unusable mess.

Stop developing gnome shell. Revert to a sensible interface that we can use efficently. Until then I'm using KDE!

4606: allow gnome 3.x to be able to use gnome 2.x UI

please allow gnome 3.x to be able to use gnome 2.x UI. otherwise, i will probably need to switch to a new desktop environment

4607: Only one thing: rm -rf gnome-shell. Scrap the entire crappy, 'tarded concept and focus on development of the good ol' 2.x, the traditional desktop model has worked for 20 years! PLEASE let it live long and prosper.

Oh, and for the love of all things holy, make the desktop CONFIGURABLE (not having to edit xml text files by hand). Yes, radical concept, letting your Users decide for themselves how they want their desktops to look and feel! Some of them are up for the task and can handle the responsibility, I'm sure.

Please don't piss off your users only to satisfy whatever need you personally feel to "experiment" with cheese, cheap rip-offs of a sub-standard ("new & revolutionary!") desktop model, that is OSX. Bought a Mac and thought, "gee, I bet EVERYONE would like such a retarded and improductive de!", did we? Well, your existing user base didn't want it, didn't need it and will probably never use it.

The best thing to do is to scrap the entire sHell 'effort'/misstake and refocus on updating and *improving* (for real, not 'improving' as in f--king it up) the Gnome 2 experience. If anything, please contain any SHell/epxerimental/crap in a seperate, opt-in package.

And then apologize for the entire mishap! Meanwhile, I'll go check out Xfce. Thanks for all the fish.

4608: More configurable

Less tablet/touchscreen-oriented (or at least with the ability to turn the touchscreen focused aspects of the environment off)

Less removal of functional, user-facing behaviours

Stop ruining it! I understand the point of Gnome 3, but it should have been a side project for use in specific environments, not a mainline release and certainly not with the removal of support of 2.x. I used to use Gnome on my laptop and desktop, before switching primarily to KDE. Compatibility layers for other interfaces should lie on top of the environment, not replace it.

4609: Bring back the GNOME 2 style interface
Allow more flexibility in the window manager
Bring back the old GNOME 2 control center

Support GNOME 2 in addition to GNOME 3 or incorporate features of GNOME 2 into GNOME 3.

4610: 1) if gnome devs absolutely want a desktop useable by noobs and granmas, then at least make some sort of switch in gnome prefs to select user level.
like: noob, normal or advanced user. where advanced users have access to a lot more tweak settings and option to customize the desktop to their tastes.

2) i'd say: remove the *bloat* and,
i'd like gnome to be a lot smaller in size, use smaller memory footprint and become even more snappy and responsive.

3) ....achieve 1 and 2 first then i might have some ideas for step 3 ;)

do not force things on users.
make the desktop elements modular and independent. (user could choose to run just some element of the gnome desktop but not the full desktop itself)
Stop forcing the worst user case as a standard for everyone.
gnome users aren't all noobs and granmas. think about them too.
i think the keyword is: "let the user choose, make everything an option" so the user can choose what he want.
even customizability level itself ..as an option..

..anyway ..

4611: * Black theme for Gnome 3.2 - it feels as a scratch, not and complete product.

* Need of so much resources. Not everyone is running dualcore CPU's with few Gb of RAM...

* Easier customization of the things you want to see. Accessibility icon cannot be hidden and xchat icon cannot be shown without a plugin? seriously?

Keep up the good work. Let users to decide more as in 2.x...

4612: Bring configuration back. Zero-conf setups are wonderful and all, but you're going for the wrong demographic. The people who want that aren't Linux users, and you're not going to win them over by pissing off your user base.

Drop the attitude, you don't have all the right answers, stop pretending like you do. There is no One-True-Way.

4613: the lack of customization

4614: More customizable
I preferred the older menu system

a more backward compatible menu system

4615: 1.Remove gnome-shell
2.Remove gnome-shell
3.Remove gnome-shell

Please, remove gnome-shell

4616: Redesign Gnome-Shell to

a. have vertical display of workspaces

b. kill the launcher (go with Docky)

Redesign Gnome-Shell to be more user/developer-friendly

4617: Just less bugs;-) New gnome is a great DE. Thanks to developers!

4618: 1. Bring back the taskbar/panels and have them be configurable like in GNOME 2.x.
2. Bring back the desktop with icons.
3. Allow users to use panels for task management instead of forcing them to use a dock.

4619: add compiz features to gmone 3.x (in particular the nice zoom function)

4620: 1.Go back to classic 2x functionality
2.Go back to classic 2x functionality
3.Go back to classic 2x functionality

Perhaps created a Gnome "classic" along side of 3x to fulfill the needs of the masses that want it.

4621: More customization options. Panel applets are easier to install. That is all.

I'm mostly impressed with the direction Gnome has taken and find it functional, if not entirely intuitive.

4622: - Make shutting down a normal option without having to press ALT.
- Get rid / fix the notification bar on the lower side of the screen
- Integrate gnome-tweak-tool into normal gnome-shell

4623: 1. Shortcut to switch between search type in the activities menu. (application search/Google/Wikipedia)

2. Better Desktop integration for evolution.

3. ???

Haters gonna hate

4624: Reduce vertical size of elements
Improve configuration by providing access to all dconf and gconf properties from system properties
Menu editor easily accessible from system properties

4625: 1. Make it possible to configure the screensaver (custom timeouts, stop it at all).
2. Starting an Application through the Activities opens a NEW instance of the Application.
3. Create a possibility for advanced users to configure gnome completly ;)

Thanks for the great work over so many years!!!!

4626: More stable GDM
Better menu similar to KDE's
More stable gnome apps - independence from other package updates

Gnome 2.x with more stability is all that is required for users like us, who have actual work to do on a PC, therefore are not quite keen to get flashy UI for the sake of change. If change should be, let it be for better stability and efficient memory consumption. A comparision can be made with KDE4, which though is a newer UI, retains the soul of KDE3. But KDE4 takes too much memory, which is where Gnome can look to be better. There is no need to imitate other OS's UI like Mac etc.

4627: 1) Allow easy discovery and installation of gnome-shell extensions, through some kind of appstore (or repository, call it as you like).

2) More documentation for developers.

3) Keep up the awesome work done for GNOME3, this is finally innovation in the desktop

4628: Only one, create 2 editions of GNOME or equivalent. What I mean is EITHER separate GNOME 3 into a Desktop/Laptop (a more modern/updated GNOME 2 style, not the fallback mode) edition and a Tablet (GNOME 3 style) edition OR make it so that users can easily change the UI, similar to KDE where you can easily change from Folder view to SAL (the netbook interface).

I haven't really tried GNOME 3.2 yet so I can't suggest any changes other than the above one.

4629: Gnome 3 is a good concept, but missing too many gnome-bar plugins compared to the old gnome bar. Usability is a huge backwards step.

4630: - Improve performance
- Simplicity
- Less bloated

4631: Better Dropbox integration, native clipboard (something like GPaste), better Twitter (& microblogging) integration

4632: more efficient use of resources

4633: Nothing. GNOME 2 is perfect as it is and whomever is in charge should make sure the next version isn't a complete insult to its faithful users.

Yes. Make GNOME 3 resemble GNOME 2 in all that was good about it and stop trying to be cool.

4634: Make sure that the features from 2.x is available in 3.x.
Fix the confusing notificaiton area.

4635: no idea right now...

keep doing good work.

4636: Accessibility in Gnome shell and improve anjuta.

Good job ;).

4637: + more keyboard shortcuts to work with it (especially with GNOME 3)
+ some GNOME Tweak application (more settings for experienced users which aren't in core where may confuse beginners)

Thank you and good luck.

4638: Make it lighter
Customizable lauchers (from commands)
Make it faster for netbooks

Don't alienate the programmers just to reach the common users. It's pretty annoying to always have to go to applications to see the open windows.
Make it more customizable.

4639: Better, but less major changes.

4640: remove gnome-shell
readd power control
more settings options

DELETE GNOME-SHELL and start over

4641: 1. NO Mono!
2. Customisation Options!

No mono and more customisation options, please.

4642: - Stop using Vala, JavaScript et cetera, but use C++ consistently with the libgtkmm and related libraries for all GNOME software.
- Reduce memory, CPU usage and load times of all core GNOME components.
- Stick with the GNOME 2.x interface and improve on that, instead of reinventing the desktop.

The GNOME 2.x interface works very nice on desktops, laptops and netbooks. Since the average tablet has more pixels on its screen than netbooks these days, I don't see any problem running GNOME 2.x on tablets, except the lack of a keyboard. I would like to see touch screen support in existing Gtk and GNOME programs, I do not want to learn new desktop paradigms.

4643: I would revert the following changes:
- The removal of the minimize/backup buttons.
- The removal of the icons on the desktop.

4644: MAKE IT MORE RESPONSIVE!
UPDATE THE LOOK & FEEL

4645: More customization
More options
Fewer icons, more keyboard availability

Macs are not better, and never have been. Windows is getting steadily worse. (I use both daily.) Unity is the worst of all.

Icons are fine if labeled -- they become self-explanatory only after extensive use. Keyboard shortcuts are always necessary -- give us the option.

Defaults must be workable. All configuration options must be visible. The more the better. Arrange them sensibly.

I use FVWM as a window manager because it was the best in the early days, still works, and does everything according to my my my preference, including the eight titlebar buttons and the keyboard shortcuts and key remappings. Most applications I use are based on Gnome or GTK.

4646: Go back to GNOME 2.0.

GNOME 3 is an absolute disaster. It feels like a pile of s**t stuffed up my throat, to put it nicely.

Go back to GNOME 2.0.

GNOME 3 is an absolute disaster. It feels like a pile of s**t stuffed up my throat, to put it nicely.

4647: 1) devs that do not listen to users
2) customization options, including panel, I do not like the new "Gnome way" of doing things. It is not productive at all. Gets into my way. I need to do more than just surfing facebook.
3) get back the old style notifications, this hidden panel does not work at all.

Listen to your users! Until then, welcome XFCE...

4648: I really miss edge-flipping in sawfish, aka, the ability to drag a window by its title bar into another workspace. I can still run sawfish, but it has other issues. I guess this is really a WM issue and not so much a GNOME issue, but I still miss it!

Oh, and more user-accessible configuration options .. Please.

4649: Expand the availability of customizable shortcuts. (tile left/right
especially)

Make more customizability available, for example themeing. As it is now it doesn't even come close to KDE.

Put the bar where you select what categories of programs you want to look at on the left, who's idea was it to first drag your mouse to the upper left corner and then you have to drag it to the right side to make selections?

Keep up the good work, the new desktop is great - I love the new minimalism.

4650: Bring back gnome 2's options, particularly the appearance menu- I need an easy way to change font colours!!

Support FGLRX for gnome shell!

More customization options in the gui for configuration, like in gnome2, like what a laptop lid should do when closed, etc.

Make a fork if you want to focus on tablets, until they're ubiquitous, make a desktop that's convenient for desktop and laptop PC's!!!!

4651: Improved Management of my Dual Monitor Setup. Specifically, I would like the option for one monitor to change workspaces, whilst leaving the second monitor constant. (as per what I have heard gnome 3 does), but also gnome does not seem to honour what xorg.conf says about which is the primary and secondary monitor.

Removal of the dependancy on Evolution - I use Thunderbird

Simpler specification of what happens when I put a blank DVD in the drive (I keep getting prompted to burn a CD, but I want to start up k3b to do that).

4652: Keep supporting and developing the 2.x-style.

4653: Single window when looking for files. The ability to set up my desktop the way I want it. You know like it used to be.

Listen to your users. Keep it stable and don't worry about eye candy.

4654: make file types really usable

make gnome 3 more customisable

make gnome 3 more customisable

4655: Better integration with other GUI toolkits
One click themes
Ponies

Keep up the good work

4656: 1. Keep supporting Gnome 2.x in major distributions
2. Keep supporting Gnome 2.x in major distributions
3. Keep supporting Gnome 2.x in major distributions

Despite what you seem to think, very very few non-technical people will ever use a Linux desktop. The vast majority of users are software developers, system administrators, etc. The vast majority use large desktops. The vast majority have configured their desktops in ways that work for them. By dumbing-down the GUI, you reduce our productivity and increase our frustration. Change for the sake of change is not helpful. Simplifying the desktop for the nonexistent netbook market and forcing those changes on all users is a Very Bad Thing.

4657: Continue to roll out new features to attract new people ;-)

4658: Reduce RAM usage, improve speed, more control to the user.

4659: * more customization (also on gui, not only ugly xml)
* remove the ugliness that is called adwaita

* tell the designers that they should not put 100px padding on everything
* remove adwaita and replace it with something sensible
* also, please change the default icon pack, it's terrible

4660: Stop getting bloated. Keep it simple.

Yep. Make it simple. Remove things. Say no.

4661: two finger tap to produce middle click and three finger tap for right click.

4662: Better and more settings of top panel
Changes in desktops ordering
get rid of bottom panel - either information should be on top or bottom, not both

4663: more graphical customization like themes, so i can stop wasting space with the default one

4664: 1. performance on older hardware (less effects, more simplicity)
2. increase configurability of panels, effects (switch off) etc...
3. good configurator/settings manager would be appreciated

4665: Many many details, which in case I expect a different behaviour.

Really, this project makes me sad. I don't understand why things must get worse and worse, without any apparent reason. It's now much worse than Windows ever was, and that's really bitter.

4666: 1) I would never ditch minimize and maximize button!
2) I would never ditch minimize and maximize button!
3) I would never ditch minimize and maximize button!

4667: I have huge problems with my graphics chipset (Unsupported by default). This is rather a linux/vendor-specific problem, but gnome-shell in 2D sucks hard.

4668: 1. Bash into everyone's heads that a PC, a tablet, and a smartphone are
NOT the same thing, and trying to make them all work the same way is
utter insanity.

2. Reverse all the incomprehensibly moronic interface design decisions
that have been made in GNOME 3, and go back to a more traditional
desktop metaphor, at least on PCs. GNOME 3 as it is might possibly
work on a tablet (don't know, haven't tried), but it is by far the
WORST interface I've seen on a PC since Microsoft Bob. Even
Ubuntu's Unity interface, which is awful, isn't as bad as GNOME 3.
(Although, Microsoft's proposed Start screen in Windows 8 might
give GNOME 3 a run for its money in the worst interface game...)

3. Put back the minimize buttons, find the designers who honestly
believe that getting rid of them was a good idea, and revoke
their licenses to design interfaces.

Seriously, what the hell is wrong with you people? There's a REASON that every major GUI over the last couple of decades has followed basically the same overall style (desktop metaphor, some kind of launcher bar, maximise AND minimize buttons, etc) - that is, it WORKS, and works well.

I completely understand that it doesn't necessarily work well on other things (like tablets and smartphones), and that may be a good reason to look at new ways of doing things for those devices, but it is NOT a good reason to completely break usability in PCs (which are, incidentally, almost the ENTIRE FRIGGIN' USERBASE for GNOME - seriously, who the hell runs GNOME on a tablet? they're pretty much all Android and iOS...).

I've been a professional Unix sysadmin since before GNOME even existed, and I've seen it start from nothing and evolve in to something that was, frankly, pretty damn impressive (especially once Compiz and the like came along to complement it). I, along with every other IT professional I know, am simply dumbfounded as to how you can get it so horribly wrong in 3.

Congratulations on pissing off most of your users. I guess I'll have to go back to KDE (their new design is horrible as well, but at least they give you the configurability to fix it)....

4669: -A LOT more customization options to the user. Even if you have to click an "advanced" option to not confuse most users. Even if it does make gnome more buggy.
-More meaningful integrated help or no help at all.
-NEVER again try to copy a mac. If I liked apple products I would use them. Copying is not inovating. And if I copy I have to make it better then the original, not worse.

4670: 1. Be able to change fonts without installing a tweak tool. This is basic functionality available in System Settings.
2. Get rid of that stupid 'Activities' and go back to a normal menu and task manager.
3. Don't force desktop and laptop users to have a smartphone interface.

See above.

4671: lower memory consumption

4672: Less useless features made for casual users like facebook and social network integration. Remove the bloat.

Remove the bloat.

4673: change is bad

4674: window resizing should be easier

4675: Don't forget about the power-users.
Don't be memory hogs
Compiz is not everything - less is often more

Keep up the good work

4676: Minimize button -- I really want this back!
Do not sleep on closing lid option
DLNA support out of the box (I just want to see my laptop on PS3 screen)

Screensaver with weather information.

4677: 1) Completely revamp the Gnome 3 desktop. Gnome 2 was on the right track for both users coming out of Windows and Mac OS X.
2) Ease access to Gnome's configuration tools, we need them available in the same way and in every aspect as they were in previous versions.
3) Change those horrible default icons, we're not in 1995 anymore (yet you think we're in some sort of alternative future to propose that horrendous GUI that is v.3).

YES. STOP PRETENDING TO BE DEAF AND BLIND, GNOME 3 IS AN ABOMINATION AND IN EVERY WAY CONTRARY TO OPEN SOURCE PHILOSOPHY.

4678: I want to see CPU meters, and have the widget allow me to switch between an ondemand mode and a performance mode, which I used to have in Gnome 2.

Listen to the real users, instead of building for a hypothetical naive user. Bring back more configurability. When Mac OS X has more configuration opportunity than Linux, something's wrong. (An example: I can easily configure what the corners of the screen do when the mouse moves to them in OS X, but not in the latest Gnome.)

4679: faster rendering of the enviroment,
a more minimal clean design for the file folder windows, like what you did with the desktop panels

Great work, your heading in the right direction!!

4680: Better support for multi monitors.

Not to fond of the 3.x workflow, less mouse required please.

4681: is gnome going to be like OSX ?

4682: give me the access to customize anything which is configurable, via text files.

become less Steve Jobs.

4683: Fix the interface
Give me back a task bar
Don't force it to melt my laptop

The new interface is terrible and does not work well on older hardware

4684: 1. Quicker access to new network shares
2. Panels on extended monitors
3. Getting shortcuts to existing Wine programs in the menu easier.

Thanks for all you do!

4685: The three things I would change in GNOME 3.2 all have to do with the people's need to customize, such as: native and easily accessible theming support as was available in GNOME 2.x, the ability to have a dock or an additional application-switcher panel in the desktop** (Please, I'm begging), and more editing options for the power user when right clicking objects. I hope I'm not asking for too much.

** I leave my docks and panels set to auto-hide mode on the desktop, but still think this feature is extremely crucial to us Linux users in GNOME 3.

GNOME 3 is beautifully polished! Thank you for your hard work, dedication, and persistence to provide the planet with a great product. My only wish is that you consider listening to your earnest user base in accordance to their needs and wants. Please listen to user complaints. Please, do give us solutions. Please, GNOME team, give the people choices. Give the people a voice. Give the people freedom.

Best of luck,
GNOME fan

4686: - Better theme support.
- More system bar widgets.

4687: Some basic functionality of tiling WMs would be nice. E.g.:
1. Auto full-screen (for selected apps most probably)
2. Occupy half window using Start+arrow (like in Windows - ouch!)

I have tried to use tiling manager and there are apps that don't fit this tiling WM paradigm while I use a lot of app fullscreen and sometimes it is nice to have two windows side-by-side.

4688: More advanced options in system panel
More themes available
Easier way to manage panel add-ons

Overall gnome 3.x is way better than 2.x, more stable and easier to use, only some advanced options could be better implemented.

4689: Change current management (apparently)
Get rid of Unity AND Gnome Shell - both are botched designs
Bring back the customizability - GNOME is a generic desktop environment, not a tablet system for small childen and/or seniors

The current situation is by far the worst since 1.4 (don't know about earlier times). Listen to the community, please.

4690: Keep up the good work...

4691: Better keyboard shortcuts, better documentation

4692: Just go back to the old Gnome, it was perfect.

Yes. Go back to the old GNOME. The 3.x versions are horrible. You completely changed the way to do things, and I cannot even install it at work because it would be a mess to work with it. You are forcing people to completely change the way they move around in GNOME. Why? Why change so much?

4693: Make it possible for the workspace switcher to wrap-around the edges again. This used to be possible with older versions of Gnome, but was removed some time ago, which I consider as a regress.

Please improve the documentation. I know it's the most annoying work, yet it is what completes a perfect desktop user experience.

4694: Renaming of the Applications Places System menu without having to resort to creating translation config files.

Option to change which day the week starts on for the calendar.

Give us a goddamn shutdown option in GNOME-Shell that doesn't require an additional key stroke. Open source is all about choice, so give me the choice. It's up to me to decide whether I should shutdown my computer or not.

Where did the GNOME support forums disappear to and are they coming back?

4695: better documentation on the configuration chain.
better documentation in general.
did I mention documentation? :)

thanks having the survey - you should do this every year.

4696: Do not force users into only one way of working!

Do not force users into only one way of working!

4697: Gnome 3
Gnome 3
Gnome 3

Listen to your users, at least the expert ones.

4698: I would have liked it if it were possible to use (parts of) Gnome 2 in parallel to Gnome 3. My favourite Gnome panel applets are not available for Gnome 3, so I cannot upgrade to Unity on Gnome 3.

4699: Access to compiz in Gnome 3
Faster response to commands

4700: 1) Bring back the ability to minimize windows. For some of us, this really does serve a purpose.
2) Allow customizing the notifications so they are less intrusive. When multiple notifications are coming in rapid-fire, the current system always seem to interfer with part of the display in which I'm working. A smaller, less instrusive notification style would be preferable.
3) Change the availability selector to be more opaque. Currently, it looks very ugly and unreadable when changing from available to unavailable etc. This is purely an esthetic change, but its current appearance is very annoying.
