AMD Radeon Gallium3D More Competitive With Catalyst On Linux
The first of many Linux OpenGL benchmarks for this very latest Radeon Gallium3D vs. Catalyst Linux comparison was using Doom 3, which works reliably on both drivers and has done so for some time with this older GL2 id Software title. While progress has been made with the open-source graphics driver, the open-source driver performance is still a long shot from matching Catalyst. For all of the tested AMD Radeon HD graphics cards on the mature R600 Gallium3D driver stack, the Catalyst driver was multiple times faster.
For the open-source Nexuiz game, which is powered by the DarkPlaces engine, the open-source AMD Linux graphics driver has become a lot more competitive with Catalyst. For several of the tested graphics cards, the R600 Gallium3D driver is about 90% the way to match Catalyst for this formerly promising game that's still good quality by today's open-source standards.
