All testing was done from an Ubuntu 13.04 base operating system. Our latest Ubuntu desktop Linux graphics benchmarks has revealed most of the performance shortcomings presented by Unity/Compiz have been resolved for Ubuntu 13.04, but to address reader fears, for testing I switched to the Xfce 4.10 desktop.

The range of OpenGL benchmarks used for testing were those that work reliably on both the open-source and closed-source drivers and for each can at least deliver meaningful frame-rates. For those wanting to see Source Engine Linux benchmarks, those will come in a separate article when working around automated test issues with the Steam client. All benchmarking was handled in a fully automated and reproducible manner through the Phoronix Test Suite automated testing framework.
