This morning AMD is rolling out two new FirePro workstation graphics cards, the FirePro V5900 and FirePro V7900. At Phoronix we received both of these graphics cards last week and have information on these new Cayman-derived graphics cards along with the very first Linux benchmarks of this new hardware compared to previous-generation FirePro offerings. In this review, we are first looking at the mid-range AMD FirePro V5900.

AMD's FirePro V5900 is the new mid-range workstation graphics card that succeeds the ATI FirePro V5800 (also reviewed on Phoronix) from last year. The FirePro V5900 is based on a "Cayman GL" GPU where as the FirePro V5800 boasted a Juniper Pro GL graphics processor. This Cayman GL GPU has 512 Stream processors and a 600MHz core clock. The FirePro V5900 graphics card is equipped with 2GB of 500MHz GDDR5 video memory with 64GB/s of memory bandwidth. The V5900 doubles the vRAM capacity compared to the V5800.

Like the V5800, the FirePro V5900 is a single-slot full-height nine-inch PCI Express 2.1 graphics card. The power consumption of the FirePro V5800 is less than 75 Watts, which puts it in line with the V5800 and also means that no external PCI-E power connection is required.
