AMD Radeon R9 290: Still Not Good For Linux Users

The Radeon R9 290 tended to perform very well with the OpenCL benchmarks, but with the OpenGL results the Linux performance remains disappointing. The Radeon R9 290 with the latest driver (Catalyst 14.1 Beta) was still being outperformed by the GeForce GTX 680, GTX 760, and GTX 770 graphics cards in multiple tests. These NVIDIA Kepler graphics cards can retail for less than the R9 290 that sells for $400~500 and can be in short supply due to crypto-currency miners, etc. For Linux desktop users, the Radeon R9 290 is not a graphics card I can recommend due to Hawaii's Linux OpenGL performance challenges and the Catalyst driver in general still causing issues for many Steam Linux games.
