Coreboot Gains Haswell Graphics Firmware Support
Just days after the exciting news of Coreboot supporting the AMD "Kabini" APU, there's more good news for this open-source project... There's now Intel "Haswell" graphics firmware support!
Ron Minnich of Google excitingly announced the Haswell firmware graphics support for Coreboot. He announced the news to the Coreboot developers' list. Ron notes, "All the heavy lifting in the final phase of this work was done by Furquan Shaikh, in his summer internship here at Google. He's done a very fine job. The code is IMHO really good. What we've learned can also be applied to older chipsets, so let me know if you have interest along those lines. We're finally breaking open the video bios situation; with luck, it will soon be as open as ARM platforms ;-)"
There's finally some open-source video BIOS/firmware support for a modern and widely-used graphics processor. While Coreboot is commonly associated with motherboard BIOS/UEFI, in the past it's been worked on by Luc Verhaegen and others for VGA support and other video-related functionality.
