Savage 2 Ships For Linux

In addition to CodeWeavers announcing the availability of their new CrossOver Games product to play popular Windows games on Linux, S2 Games has today announced the availability of the Linux client for its "Savage 2: A Tortured Soul" game. Savage 2 is a fantasy-themed game that is a combination of a first person shooter, real-time strategy, and action role-playing game. This is the sequel to "Savage: The Battle For Newerth", which was also ported to Linux some years ago.

Savage 2: A Tortured Soul had shipped for Windows on January 16 of this year, but unfortunately, the Linux client wasn't ready at this time. When S2 Games announced it would be creating a Linux port, their target was to have the Linux binaries ready at the time of the game's launch, but that simply didn’t happen with the closed Linux beta testing only starting earlier this month. S2 Games sells Savage 2 on their website as a digital download (at a price of $29.99 USD), but a Linux demo (and account setup) is available as a free download. Unlike some other games of this genre, there is no associated monthly fee. With Savage 2, S2 Games takes an extra step by providing both 32-bit and 64-bit Linux binaries. The 32-bit Savage 2 Linux installer is 711MB in size.

S2 Games today also released a free content update for this game, which introduces level armor progression, full clan implementation, commander VoIP, new Hellbourne unit, achievements, two new community created maps, and other changes.

We had run this Real Time Strategy Shooter on Ubuntu 8.04 Beta with a variety of different hardware and the game had run quite well. We hadn't run into any glitches or any other bugs during the short time we had spent with this game. Unfortunately, Savage 2 doesn't have any integrated system benchmarking capabilities, but this does appear to be a very solid port done by the developers at S2 Games. More information on Savage 2: A Tortured Soul is available from the S2 Games website.

Today's certainly been a good day for Linux gamers!
