With the old OpenArena 0.8.5, the classic Mesa DRI driver is faster. This isn't a big surprise though since older i915 Gallium3D benchmarks have shown the classic Mesa driver generally performing better, albeit more GL functionality is exposed with the Gallium3D driver.

The OpenArena 0.8.8 performance was about the same, but the frame-rates were far from playable.

The classic Mesa driver was faster as well for World of Padman with a mere resolution of 800 x 600 where the classic driver was twice as fast.
