Running Ubuntu 9.04 With Older Hardware

The 7-Zip compression results were close, though Ubuntu 9.04 dropped slightly in favor of 8.10.

LZMA compression is another case where Ubuntu 8.10 was a hair faster than Ubuntu 9.04.

Ubuntu 9.04 had a higher maximum disk throughput than Ubuntu 8.10 while booting, and this faster disk performance remained when in the desktop. The 512MB write performance for Ubuntu 9.04 was 16.66MB/s while Ubuntu 8.10 had wrote at 15.29MB/s.

Besides faster writes in Ubuntu 9.04, the read performance was also higher. Ubuntu 9.04 was at 19.05MB/s while Ubuntu 8.10 was behind at 17.40MB/s.
