Disk Encryption Tests On Fedora 21
For the other disk-oriented benchmarks, the performance overhead of using the LUKS encrypted system was lowered by just a few percent.
Overall during the course of all the open-source Linux benchmarks ran for this article, the CPU usage difference averaged out to being just 1% higher with the encrypted system compared to the stock Fedora 21 installation for the Core i7 ASUS Zenbook ultrabook.
While there is a small performance overhead in using full-disk encryption for modern systems, I'd still highly recommend using full-disk encryption for any production systems storing sensitive information.
